Fatima, Portugal — 1917
In 1917, during the First World War, the Virgin Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children near the village of Fatima, Portugal: Lucia dos Santos, age ten, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, ages eight and seven.
Our Lady's message was simple and urgent: pray the Rosary every day for peace in the world, turn back to God, offer prayers and sacrifices for sinners, and entrust yourself to her Immaculate Heart.
At her final apparition, on October 13, 1917, she called herself the Lady of the Rosary, and a large crowd witnessed what became known as the Miracle of the Sun.
In 1930, the Church declared the apparitions worthy of belief. Francisco and Jacinta died young, in the influenza epidemic that followed the war, and were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017. Lucia became a Carmelite nun and died in 2005.
Our Lady taught the children this prayer to say after each decade of the Rosary:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Amen.
